Wild Outlaws: Slot Overview
We go to the Wild West with Light & Wonder in their online slot Wild Outlaws, shooting six guns. The name «Wild Outlaws» might seem a bit boastful when you think about it, conjuring up images of scumbags riding roughshod over borders, getting stuck in stage wagons, shooting up saloons and generally engaging in all kinds of crazy shenanigans. With that in mind, let’s check out Wild Outlaws and see what kind of western the Light & Wonder team has cooked up.
We must say that first impressions were not terrific. Wild West slots are absurdly plentiful; not a month seems to go by without piling them on top of one another. Light & Wonder isn’t a trailblazer itself, but a quick glance at Wild Outlaws might suggest otherwise. It looks pretty old, its classic one-horse town lacks personality or visual appeal, and the game struggles to rekindle the romance of the genre. The music, though, is quite enjoyable.

Leaving audio-visuals aside for now, Wild Outlaws is played on a 6-reel game board; each reel contains 4 symbols, giving players 4,096 ways to win. A medium-high volatility machine, wins are generated when at least three matching symbols fall from left to right, starting on the first reel, providing a theoretical default return of 96%. As you play, you must choose a base bet from 20 p/c to £/€10 per spin, and turn on Gamble and Premium Play mode. Both options are described in detail below.
Metal card kings 9-A act as wild symbols of lesser value Outlaw, rewarding players with a pile of coins worth 0.4 to 1 times the bet on a roll of six such symbols or 1.5 to 10 times the bet on a roll of six boots, hats, skulls or sacks of gold. The wanted poster symbols are «wild», falling naturally on reels 2, 3, 4 or 5, or can be added to reels 1 and 6 with the Wild Revolver Bonus. Wild symbols can replace any regular paying symbol.
Wild Outlaws: Features of the slot

The Wild Revolver Bonus can trigger (not guaranteed) if 2 scatter symbols appear on the reels. When the feature is activated, the scatters become wild and 3 to 5 bullet holes appear on the game grid, which then turn into wild symbols.
Free Spins Bonus
A roll of 3 symbols Bonus triggers the free spins bonus. Each Bonus symbol spins showing a number from 1 to 6. These numbers are added up to determine the number of free spins. During free spins, 4 locked positions are added to the panel above reels 2 to 5. When a wild symbol falls on reels 2-5, after assessing any winnings its duplicate is moved to the top of the reel, where it becomes a sticky wild symbol until the end of the feature. If the wild symbol moves up and there is already a sticky wild symbol on the reel, the sticky wild symbol receives a multiplier. The multiplier is the number of wild symbols fixed on the reel. If 2 bonus symbols are rolled, the Wild Revolver Bonus game may be triggered. Or, if 3 bonus symbols are rolled, the scatters spin to determine the number of additional free spins.
Premium Game
Activation of the Premium Play mode increases the base bet by 50%. The advantage is that if you win more than 1.6 times the Premium Play bet, The Sheriff Bonus is triggered. Here, 12 sheriff icons appear on the screen and players choose one of them to win a cash prize of x1, x2, x3, x4, x5 or free spins. If the free spins are received, the game returns to the base game where the reels spin, triggering the free spins.
Gamble function
If the Gamble switch is on, the Gamble function is triggered when the winnings are 5x of the bet or more. If Premium Play is active, Gamble is triggered when you win 2.5x the bet of Premium Play. The Gamble screen offers two options — doubling the current winnings or free spins. Players can adjust the gamble, collect or continue the gamble — up to a set limit. A maximum of 30 free spins can be won, and winnings cannot exceed 10,000 times the bet.
Wild Outlaws: Verdict on the slot machine
Presumably one can be wild and not be outlaws, so can one be outlaws and not be wild? Perhaps, I don’t know, never mind; we may have been thinking about Wittgenstein’s language games, but that is just one of the questions that arose during our review of Wild Outlaws. Other thoughts arose, such as was this game made recently? Again, presumably yes, but it sure as hell doesn’t look dated, and as is often the case, it’s hard to know if the studio chose the retro style on purpose or not. Wild Outlaws looks like it might have come out a few years before the last Light & Wonder Western slot we reviewed, Wild Showdown, so who knows?
It’s a shame, because there are some interesting ideas here. Things like Premium Play mode are intriguing, and you don’t need huge winnings to trigger it. Get a win of more than 1.6x, and you have a chance to increase it with a multiplier or even trigger free spins, which really happened in the review, so that’s a definite possibility. Even the Gamble feature is tempting, as it appears when you win 5 times your bet or higher, both of which have relatively low requirements for participation. By comparison, Big Time Gaming’s Win Exchange typically runs between 25-100x for gambling or 100x for free spins. Undoubtedly, they have different gamblers in their sights, but both studios’ methods have their merits, and the way Wild Outlaws seems to appeal to certain gamblers.
The rest of the features aren’t bad either, so the downside of Wild Outlaws might seem to be its outer wrapper and lack of a vibrant personality, although beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. If the game had more charisma, a little more energy, or didn’t look so dated, all the good things about Wild Outlaws could shine brighter.
